Joel's Favorite Book

Hello everyone, this is Joel Flynn and I’m going to share what my favorite book is.

My favorite book is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This book has helped me incredibly in my collegiate career. Although I didn’t start reading again until I was in college. When I was younger I would read every day. I always had a book when there was free time at school, but as I got older I thought I hated reading. I couldn’t find a book that I enjoyed past the first 10 pages, but the book Think and Grow Rich was a different story. No matter how old you are, the principles it states could help you grow at any point of your life.

Think and Grow Rich was originally published in 1937, but the key principles are still relevant in today’s lives. The book is about personal development and discusses 13 principles in life that anyone can use to be successful in academics, careers, or entrepreneurial endeavors. The book dives into achieving success but not just in a monetary form. It is more about what riches are to you, that could be happiness, wealth, relationships, etc. It truly gives you a broader viewpoint on everything we encounter in our careers. There were two main parts that stuck out to me. One of the main parts that stuck out to me is a common trait that is an obstacle. The trait is procrastination, and I used to struggle with it badly, but the book thoroughly explains the science behind it and ways to fight it with new habits. The other part is having a desire. It’s about whatever you want to achieve in life and if you truly apply yourself in every way possible you can accomplish your goals. Now, several successful entrepreneurs such as Tai Lopez, Grant Cardone, and Graham Stephan suggest reading this book.

Growing up I used to love reading but lost sight of that as I got older. However, my first college English course required us to read parts of the book. This book instantly got me hooked and reintroduced me to this hobby. I ended up reading the entire book instead of the couple chapters we were assigned. Think and Grow Rich is about personal development and discusses 13 principles in life that anyone can use to be successful in academics, careers, or entrepreneurial endeavors. This is part of the reason I wanted to advocate for Friends of Literacy. Reading is essential to growing as a person and learning. The benefits of reading are endless. I believe everyone has a right to that. Plus, it is never too late, which is why I think Friends of Literacy is a great start for adults who are illiterate.

Overall, the author Napoleon Hill did a great job revealing his outlook on success and the process of achieving riches through the book. Plus, this book is one of those that you can reread several times and still learn something new. It has been republished many times and updated to the 21st century.
