Joel's Favorite Book

Image
Hello everyone, this is Joel Flynn and I’m going to share what my favorite book is. My favorite book is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This book has helped me incredibly in my collegiate career. Although I didn’t start reading again until I was in college. When I was younger I would read every day. I always had a book when there was free time at school, but as I got older I thought I hated reading. I couldn’t find a book that I enjoyed past the first 10 pages, but the book Think and Grow Rich was a different story. No matter how old you are, the principles it states could help you grow at any point of your life.   Think and Grow Rich was originally published in 1937, but the key principles are still relevant in today’s lives. The book is about personal development and discusses 13 principles in life that anyone can use to be successful in academics, careers, or entrepreneurial endeavors. The book dives into achieving success but not just in a monetary form. It i...

Empowering Educators

Image
Reid here! I’ve decided that today I am going to stray from our usual “favorite books” theme for our blogs. Instead, I wanted to recognize some of my past teachers who are responsible for my development as a student, leader, and person. My education is one of the things that I value most in my life. I am incredibly thankful for the many teachers I have had throughout the years. If it wasn’t for the educational foundation that was built for me at Lowes Elementary, I wouldn’t be where I am today. If Mrs. Davidson hadn’t taught me how to write creatively by taking home our class stuffed animals, I wouldn’t be writing this blog. If Mrs. Robin hadn’t taught me proper grammar, I’d sound uneducated. Or, if Mrs. Goodman hadn’t taught me how to appreciate where I came from, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate where I’m headed. After elementary school, I moved on to St. Mary Schools where my foundation was built upon. I have Ms. Wright to thank for teaching me to read like a scholar, and ...

Lexi's Favorite Book

Image
Hey everyone- my name is Lexi Crawford and today I am going to be talking about my favorite childhood book. When I was younger I absolutely loved reading. Every second of my free time that I was not playing outside or hanging out with my friends I had a book in my hand. I have this vivid memory in my head of sitting in my bed with a book in my lap when I hear my mom yelling from the kitchen downstairs, “Lexi! Put the book down and come eat.” This memory stuck out to me because I now find that I hardly read at all, except for the mandatory readings my classes require. It is interesting to see how much life changes as you grow older, but growing up reading as much as I did, it was difficult for me to find a single book that I could choose as my favorite. After a lot of thinking, I discovered that the book Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein was the book that stuck out to me the most. I think that the reason this book stuck out as much as it did was not because it created ...

Reading Can be Fun

Hey guys! It’s Reid. Today, I am going to tell you about my favorite book—well, my 2 favorite. Growing up, I never really enjoyed reading. I never really read books unless they were assigned for classwork. I was just uninterested, and I always struggled to find an engaging book. I remember in 7 th grade I would go to Mrs. Locker’s library almost every morning looking for a new book…but I had never finished reading the one I checked out the day before. When she finally noticed this, she began searching for a book that I would enjoy. Although I have never cared much for reading, I have always loved sports. And one thing I’ve always read are sports articles. After a big game, I always read the articles from various sports journalists. The combination of the statistics, the highlights, and the thoughts about future games was something that I thought was very intriguing. You can bet that I anxiously wait for the alert on my phone after Tennessee softball finishes a weekend s...

Favorite Book

By Ian Pollock Part of the reason I wanted to work with Friends of Literacy is because growing up I was a voracious reader. I often read the same books over and over again. My favorite books are the Song of Ice and Fire, more widely known as A Game of Thrones . The book series has been adopted into a hit HBO show that has introduced millions to it. The books were written by American author George R.R. Martin. Martin is a fantasy , horror , and science fiction author. The books take place on two continents. The main one Westeros, which is modeled after medieval Europe, and Essos, which is huge and inspired by many different cultures. As the books go on, they begin to focus on a larger and more diverse cast of characters.  The series is low fantasy, meaning that while there is magic it is rare and often not a major factor in events. Much of the magic of the world is relegated to myth and legend. As the books go on these myths become more relevant but only to part of the cast....

Ready Readers Presents...

Greetings! We are the Ready Readers. Ready Readers is an Indiegogo Campaign created to raise funds for Friends of Literacy, a Knoxville nonprofit. Friends of Literacy strives to educate and empower individuals within the Knoxville community who do not have the adequate education to tackle the various tasks of everyday life. Did you know that 10% of adults in Knoxville are functionally illiterate? This means that 10% of Knoxville adults lack the basic education needed to navigate the world. Did you know that the nation’s illiteracy rate is 14%. This means that about 46 million people in the US do not know how to read. Illiteracy within our community is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Ready Readers hopes to bring attention to these numbers. We want to help Friends of Literacy keep its doors open to continue fighting illiteracy in Knoxville. During this journey, we plan to write blogs for you about our favorite books. Meet the Group: Lexi Crawford Hi! My name is ...
